The main focus of the research is to develop methods that will accelerate the delivery of improved material into use in Ireland, while at the same time protecting valuable genetic resources from threats (e.g. climate change). Volume production and timber quality are the main attributes of interest, although biomass production may be a secondary consideration in a few cases.
The ForGen progamme is divided into three main projects, although there is overlap among these. The tasks/ subtasks from the original proposal document are listed for each project (because of overlap, some are listed more than once). However, the task/subtasks will be used largely for reporting purposes. The three projects are:
- Provenance selection
- Breeding and propagation
- Climate change, genetic resources and support tools
